North River Wastewater Treatment Plant Fire - Harbor Water Updates and Sampling Information
On July 20 the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant was taken offline July 20 following a four alarm fire in the engine room. At approximately 5:15 pm July 20 untreated wastewater started to be directly discharged into the Hudson River. DEP has made significant progress in making the plant operational and currently there are no untreated discharges into the Hudson River.

The Health Department provides the latest water quality information for NYC beaches. Water quality conditions are analyzed on a regular basis and beaches are classified as either "Open for Swimming," "Under Advisory," or "Closed – Temporarily Restricted for Bathing."
