Flushing Bay Combined Sewer Outfall (CSO) Retention Facility

The Flushing Bay CSO

Overview

The Flushing CSO Facility collects 43 million gallons of combined sewage from central Queens. The collected combined sewage is held until the end of the storm and then pumped to the Tallman Island Waste Water Treatment Plant where it is treated.

Schedule

The Flushing Bay CSO Facility was completed in 2009.

Cost

The cost of the Facility was $291 million.

Community Issues

As part of the construction of this project, substantial community amenities were included. The Al Oerter recreational facility is sited directly above the CSO Facility and provides a gymnasium, running track, computer room, and cardiovascular equipment for the community. In addition, two soccer fields were also constructed adjacent to the CSO Facility. As part of an earlier contract, improvements to the promenade near the worlds fair marina site were also made.
