AMR Installation Process

STEP 1: DEP Employees wear uniforms and badges, feel free to ask for their identification.

If the wire from the meter to the outside of the house is broken or old the wire may need to be replaced.

Step 3

In about half of homes we will also be replacing the water meter if it is more than 12 years old. Replacing most meters in homes involves briefly turning off the water, uncoupling the old meter and installing the new meter.

Step 4

When the new meter is installed the technician turns the water back on. In doing so he/she tests the meter to ensure its operating.

Step 5

Installing the AMR Transmitter (called an “MTU” for Meter Transmitter Unit) requires removing the old meter reading remote receptacle.

Step 6

If the existing wires back to the water meter are in good condition we’ll reuse the existing wires.

Step 7

The MTU is connected to the wires going to the water meter.

Step 8

The technician uses a handheld computer to program the MTU, associating the MTU with your specific water meter.

The job is finished when the MTU is screwed into place.
