Engine Company 277
STV, Inc.
BrooklynThe sculptural design of this Engine Company takes advantage of the building’s open site, with the structure curved in three dimensions over a square base and vertical slot windows on each side that align with the slide poles in the interior of the building. For Engine Company 277, rather than the traditional masonry and steel construction, it was decided to use cast concrete panels and cast stone block. The panels are suspended from an elaborate steel superstructure. Both the front and rear faзades are curtain wall systems under a perforated metal screen. This screen allows natural light to penetrate the interior of the building. As part of the Department of Cultural Affairs’ Percent for Art Program, artist Julian LaVerdiere created Sentinel Lanterns which flank the entrance. The Art Commission of the City of New York honored this project with an Excellence in Design award in 2005.
