The Bronx Museum of the Arts
Arquitectonica
The Bronx Museum of the Arts building was recently expanded to include a new three-story cultural resource wing. The project’s most striking design element is the irregular, vertically folded front façade screen made of fritted glass and painted aluminum panels placed diagonally to emphasize the depths of the folds, resulting in an accordion-like effect. Other elements of the project include a double-height lobby designed to accommodate large scale sculpture and media works and serve as the Museum’s primary area for gathering and visitor information; a newly expanded museum shop; a main gallery with a floating, slightly recessed ceiling; a second-floor open air terrace; a new education center and a media lab. An intricate pattern of black and white masonry block is laid into the sides of the building to represent unique brick walls of old Bronx row houses. |
