Introduction
Vinegar
Hill is an approximately eight block area bounded
by the Navy Yard, Plymouth, Bridge and York streets
in the northern part of Community District 2 in
Brooklyn. The area contains a mix of residential
buildings, industrial buildings and garages, vacant
lots and several community facility uses. Flanked
by the Brooklyn Navy Yard to the east, the Con
Edison Hudson Avenue Power Generating station
and related facilities to the north, Farragut
Housing, a public housing project to the south
and the neighborhood known as DUMBO to the west,
this small mixed use community is zoned primarily
for manufacturing uses. Most of the houses within
Vinegar Hill date from the 19th century, and are
primarily wood-frame construction with the exception
of a row of brownstones on Front Street between
Bridge and Gold streets.
The
Landmarks Preservation Commission is in the process
of studying the historic value of the houses in
parts of Vinegar Hill, and their preliminary investigation
indicates the potential for mapping two historic
districts encompassing most of the houses within
them. The Department of City Planning is undertaking
this zoning study to determine if it is appropriate
to rezone areas within Vinegar Hill to a residential
district with commercial overlays, in order to
complement the efforts of the LPC.
