59. Colonel Charles Young
Park runs from West 143rd to
West 145th Street on the east side of Malcolm X Blvd. to the
Harlem River Drive
This 6.4-acre park is named in
memory of one of the United States' first black army officers
who served in World War I. The park is located on the east
side of the Boulevard between W. 144th and W. 145th Streets,
just south of the W. 145th Street Bridge to the Bronx. Recreational
facilities include twelve handball courts, five basketball
courts, two basketball backboards for practice and one-one
matches, four turf softball fields, and eight horseshoe
pits. From the1920's to the 1940's, it was the practice
field for the old Negro Professional Football and Baseball
Leagues, and today hosts citywide summer basketball leagues.
Stop by for a game of pick-up basketball, if you think you
can keep up!
