58. National Guard 369th
Regiment Armory 2366 Fifth Avenue between West
142nd and 143rd Streets, west side
The 369th
Regiment, known as "The Harlem Hell Fighters," built
this armory as their place of residence between 1921 and 1933.
Architects Van Wart & Wein designed the drill shed and
administration building combining the medieval design forms
of earlier armories with contemporary art deco elements. The
369th earned many awards for their outstanding military achievements
for service in World War I, Okinawa in 1945, the Korean War
and the Persian Gulf War. The Armory also houses the Harlem
Tennis Center, where aspiring U.S. Open players hone their
skills on professional courts.
