An Art
Moderne-style building, this library is on the former site
of Madame C.J. Walker's elaborate townhouse and beauty parlor.
Madame Walker, born to freed slaves shortly after the Civil
War, acquired her wealth through the creation of hair-straightening
products. Her daughter, A'lelia, set aside a floor of the
home to help struggling writers and artists. Her generosity
was instrumental in producing the renaissance of art and literature
enjoyed in Harlem during the 1920's and 30's. Countee Cullen
was a prominent poet of this period and a member of A'lelia's
salon society.
