The FDR lies directly on the water’s edge north of the United Nations. Its proximity to the water between East 51st and East 60th streets makes a waterfront greenway impossible without cantilevered structures. The current reconstruction of the FDR requires that northbound traffic be routed onto a temporary structure built over the river, thereby delaying any permanent construction of a greenway.
