Decline of New York Citys Regional Position
While the city captures a large number of jobs, its employment share in the region has declined. In 1958 New York City had over 3.1 million workers, representing 80 percent of the total employment of the region. Yet in 2000, when the city had 3.2 million workers, its employment share in the region had dropped to 65 percent.
