Abstract:

NYC_Waterfront_Parks is a polygon shapefile of parklands on the water's edge in New York City. Any portions of a park that are located upland (separated from water by the first upland street) are excluded.

Purpose:

NYC_Waterfront_Parks was created to compliment the PAWS (Publicly Accessible Waterfront Spaces) shapefile used for the interactive Citywide Waterfront Access Map for the Department of City Planning's website.

Supplemental Information:

This shapefile compliments the PAWS shapefile for mapping all open spaces on the water's edge in New York City. Most of the parks in this file are included in the New York City Department of City Planning's Selected Facilities and Program Sites in New York City database and are under the jurisdiction of NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, NYS Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, or the National Park Service. Related data: PAWS: PAWS is a polygon shapefile of publicly accessible waterfront spaces in NYC containing jurisdictional and construction status information. The majority of these spaces were constructed in conjunction with private waterfront developments, pursuant to the NYC Zoning Resolution. This feature class also includes spaces that are under construction (in progress), or have been approved through ULURP (Uniform Land Use Review Procedure) but construction of the waterfront spaces has not commenced. The publicly owned spaces in this database do not include parks or open spaces under the jurisdiction of NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, NYS Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, or the National Park Service. This shapefile was created by the New York City Department of City Planning and is located on their website (www.nyc.gov/dcp) in the BYTES of the Big Apple section. Publicly Accessible Waterfront Spaces Database: This database contains information about publicly accessible waterfront spaces in NYC. The database can be joined to the NYC_PAWS shapefile on the PAWS_ID field. The database includes many additional attribute fields and provides more detailed information on each publicly accessible waterfront space. This database was created by the New York City Department of City Planning and is located on their website (www.nyc.gov/dcp) in the BYTES of the Big Apple section. Selected Facilities and Program Sites in New York City Database: Data providing the location, type and capacity of public and private community facilities in New York City, including schools, parks, libraries, public safety, day care, foster care, special needs housing, health and mental health facilities and programs. To facilitate analysis and mapping, the data is geocoded and available in two formats: ASCII delimited text files and Microsoft Access database. This can be joined to NYC_Waterfront_Parks shapefile on the FAC_ID field. This database was created by the New York City Department of City Planning and is located on their website (www.nyc.gov/dcp) in the BYTES of the Big Apple section.
