BYTES of the BIG APPLE is a family of software, data and geographic base map files for the City of New York. The Department of City Planning offers these products for free download or by a license agreement.

A single line street base map representing the city's streets and other linear geographic features such as shorelines, surface rail lines and boardwalks, along with feature names and address ranges for each addressable street segment. The ESRI version is now being released as a File Geodatabase instead of a Personal Geodatabase and can only be used with version ArcGIS 9.2 or higher. In addition to the data, the geodatabase also includes two pre-built address locators that can be used out-of-the-box, with no steps to set them up. The ESRI version also comes with several new layer files for viewing the data, including a new Street Name Label layer and a Street Direction Arrows layer.

The Tax Block Base Map files are schematic representations of the tax block outlines and should not be used for applications that require precise measurements. Release............. 07C Date of Data..... October 2007 Notice to Users. Release 07C will be the last release of this data product with a MapInfo version. For future releases, users will be able to directly open the shapefile version in MapInfo.

The Tax Lot Base Map files are schematic representations of the tax lot outlines. They should not be used for applications that require precise measurements. The licensee also receives files of the tax blocks, borough boundaries and community districts. The tax lot files are available both clipped to the shoreline and unclipped (including areas of blocks and lots underwater). Release............. 07C Date of Data..... October 2007 Price................. $250 per Borough Notice to Users. Release 07C will be the last release of this data product with a MapInfo version. For future releases, users will be able to directly open the shapefile version in MapInfo.

Extensive land use and geographic data at the tax lot level in ASCII comma-delimited format. The PLUTO files contain more than seventy fields derived from data maintained by city agencies. Tax lot data for selected tax blocks or Community Districts can be extracted using the PLUTO Select application which is included with this product.

The PAD (Property Address Directory) file contains additional geographic information at the tax lot level not found in the PLUTO files. This data includes alias addresses and Building Identification Numbers (BINs). It consists of two ASCII, comma delimited files: a tax lot file and an address file.

Data providing the location, type and capacity of public and private community facilities in New York City, including schools, parks, libraries, public safety, day care, foster care, special needs housing, health and mental health facilities and programs. To facilitate analysis and mapping, the data is geocoded and available in two formats: ASCII delimited text files and Microsoft Access database.

The data and geographic base map files can be imported into a variety of commercially available spreadsheet, database and/or geographic information systems (GIS) software for computer-generated map production and analysis. The City of New York does not provide such products to the public nor does it endorse or recommend specific products. Free GIS data viewers are available from both ESRI (Arc Explorer) and MapInfo (Pro Viewer).
