STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL OF 530 BLOCK OZONE PARK REZONING

"The City Council’s approval of our rezoning plan for Ozone Park is the culmination of an effort that has been long sought by the local community, and it will provide a framework for more orderly and sustainable growth for the neighborhood. This important milestone, which represents the second largest rezoning initiative we have undertaken in the last 12 years, punctuates our tremendous efforts to ensure development is consistent with the character of neighborhoods, while at the same time fostering new business and housing opportunities near mass transit links. Since 2002, 124 area-wide rezoning plans have been adopted, covering nearly 40 percent of the New York City. The adoption of this rezoning today adds 530 blocks, bringing the citywide total to more than 12,000 blocks – the largest planning agenda since the 1961 Zoning Resolution. I commend the City Council for approving this significant plan, in particular Council Members Eric Ulrich and Ruben Wills. I also want to thank City Planning Commissioner Amanda Burden and her staff for their hard work over the last 12 years to help our city grow sustainably, to providing housing and jobs, to reclaim our waterfront, and to improve overall quality of life for New Yorkers."

Department of City Planning
The Department of City Planning (DCP) promotes strategic growth, transit-oriented development, and sustainable communities in the City, in part by initiating comprehensive, consensus-based planning and zoning changes for individual neighborhoods and business districts, as well as establishing policies and zoning regulations applicable citywide. It supports the City Planning Commission and each year reviews more than 500 land use applications for actions such as zoning changes and disposition of City property. The Department assists both government agencies and the public by providing policy analysis and technical assistance relating to housing, transportation, community facilities, demography, waterfront and public space.
