DCP's Tom Costa wins 2010 Isaac Liberman Public Service Award |
On December 13, 2010, Tom Costa, City Planning's Deputy Supervisor of Data Management in the Geographic Systems Section within the Information Technology Division, was awarded the Isaac Liberman Public Service Award. Tom is a City Planner with a Master's degree in Urban Planning from Hunter College and has been working at City Planning since August 1989.
Tom's work has measurably improved the efficiency and quality of service to New York City by insuring that the quality of the geographic data used by innumerable city agencies and systems, including 311, is of the highest standard. The Geosupport System is an integrated system of software and data files that processes New York City geographic locations. Tom supervises the research, quality assurance, and validations of all the unit's data files as well as the coordination of the Geosupport System's quarterly production cycle. |

Commissioners Burden and Sadik-Khan receive EPA Smart Growth Award |
| Commissioner Burden and Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan went to Washington, D.C. to receive an EPA award for Overall Excellence in Smart Growth. The EPA award is recognizing the work of four agencies -- City Planning, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Design and Construction and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene -- and their efforts to advance the sustainability goals that Mayor Michael Bloomberg has set out in PlaNYC. The two City Planning projects awarded by the EPA are FRESH, which expand access to healthy food options in communities with high rates of diet-related diseases, and bike parking, which requires secure and indoor bicycle parking in new residential and commercial developments. |

Commissioner Burden attends MWA 2010 Waterfront Conference |
| Commissioner Amanda Burden attended and spoke at the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance's 2010 Waterfront Conference on November 30, 2010 at the National Museum of the American Indian in Lower Manhattan. Commissioner Burden spoke about Vision 2020: The New York City Comprehensive Waterfront Plan, a sustainable blueprint for the City's entire waterfront that City Planning has been developing with extensive public outreach over the past year. She also participated in a panel discussion about the importance and future of New York City's waterfront with Deputy Mayor Robert Steel, Parks Department Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Cas Holloway, Economic Development Corp. President Seth Pinsky and David Bragdon, the City's Director of the Mayor's Office of Long-Term Planning & Sustainability. |

Commissioner Burden speaks at NYCHA SpeakingGreen Lecture Series |
On November 17, 2010, City Planning Commissioner Amanda Burden was the guest speaker at the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) SpeakingGreen Lecture Series, which was started in 2008 to facilitate the exchange of ideas between experts and the community to increase awareness of the Authority's environmental impact and the need to reduce energy consumption through sophisticated technology and simple changes in our daily habits.
"New York is already the greenest city in the country," Commissioner Burden said, due to its population density and public transportation networks that reduce reliance on cars. However, she added, "Eighty percent of energy consumption comes from buildings, so making them more efficient and even capable of creating their own energy with solar panels and other means is our next challenge." DCP receives two Excellence in Technology awards at NYC Technology Awards ceremony |
On November 4, 2010, City Planning won two Excellence in Technology awards at the NYC Technology Awards ceremony. For working with DoITT on developing an application called A4, Address Assignment Application, DCP received the 2010 Excellence in Technology Award for Best IT Collaboration Among Agencies.
The award was shared by DCP, DoITT and Borough Presidents. Rudy Lopez and Michele McInnes received the award on behalf of DCP. In addition, the NYC DataMine and NYC BigApps competition received the 2010 Excellence in Technology Award for Overall Excellence in Technology.
DCP -- along with the Parks Department, Department of Transportation, the Department of Sanitation and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene – received special recognition for their work on this initiative. Michael Miller received the award on behalf of DCP. |

Commissioner Burden presentation at Regional Plan Association |
| Commissioner Burden and David Bragdon, Director of the Mayor's Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability, spoke at the scheduled board meeting of the Regional Plan Association . Commissioner Burden described the Department's past and present efforts to promote sustainability on a local and regional level, highlighting the agency's 102 rezonings to steer growth toward transit-served areas as well as green initiatives to promote pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly neighborhoods, car sharing, and landscaping that improves stormwater management and reduces the urban heat island effect. Commissioner Burden described the agency's current efforts to remove zoning impediments to green building systems such as rooftop solar installations, solar shades, and highly insulated exterior walls. She also recognized and thanked RPA for its contribution to assembling a regional New York-Connecticut consortium to apply for HUD's Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant, citing the potential of this grant to advance both regional cooperation and local implementation of planning for sustainable growth. |

| On October 6, 2010, Commissioner Amanda Burden made a presentation at the Museum of Modern Art on Vision 2020: New York City's Comprehensive Waterfront Plan and participated in a panel discussion on the Rising Currents exhibit. Other panelists included Guy Nordenson, Anuradha Mathur and Dilip da Cunha, and they discussed their reactions to the exhibition and the role of the water and waterfront at the metropolitan, national and global levels. |

| On October 4, 2010, City Planning's Web Manager, Anida Murati, received one of Mayor Bloomberg's 2010 Customer Service Excellence Awards. Anida has been Web Manager since 2008, and was recognized for her dedication to the management and enhancement of City Planning's website, one of the largest in city government. The website, www.nyc.gov/planning, is a key tool for City Planning to interact with its customers in the public and other government agencies. |

| City City Planning's Queens Director John Young spoke at the Queens Chamber of Commerce Zoning Forum on April 22, 2010 about citywide initiatives and specific Queens neighborhood plans. Young discussed the City's plans for three regional business districts in Jamaica, Long Island City and Flushing as well as comprehensive neighborhood rezoning plans for Astoria, South Jamaica (the administration's largest rezoning to date) and Rosedale, among others. |

| City Planning's Executive Director, Richard Barth, attended the American Planning Association's 2010 National Conference in New Orleans in April. Barth moderate a panel discussion called "Mixed Use Zoning and Transit Oriented Development" that included City Planning's Bronx Director, Carol Samol, and the planning directors from Minneapolis and San Diego. Barth also presented and took part in a panel discussion on immigration and housing trends that included the Los Angeles planning director, the Director of Research for the APA and Armando Carbonell, Chair of the Department of Planning and Urban Form at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy.
