2009

On December 11, 2009, Commissioner Burden attended the Bisnow Sustainability Breakfast to talk about how New York City is at the forefront of the environmental movement. New York City is already one of the most sustainable cities in the world, but Mayor Bloomberg has charged us with going even further with PlaNYC, the Mayor's blueprint for a greener, greater New York. In addition to the City's many green initiatives, City Planning is helping to decrease the City's carbon footprint by directing growth opportunities to transit hubs, while limiting growth in low-density areas of the City. To learn more about the Sustainability Breakfast, visit Bisnow's website.

Commissioner Burden participated in a panel for the American Architectural League and the French Cultural Services event 'The metropolis as urban and social space' organized at Cooper Union. The panel included French architect Christian de Portzamparc as well as Paris's Deputy Mayor in charge of the Paris Metropole project Pierre Mansat and Vice President of the Conseil Régional d'Ile de France Mireille Ferri. Commissioner Burden discussed the Bloomberg Administration's ambitious rezoning agenda, and the emphasis on enhancing quality design throughout the city.

The Department of City Planning's Waterfront Text Amendment received a 2009 Excellence on the Waterfront award from the Waterfront Center. This initiative ensures that the city's waterfront spaces are accessible and inviting to the public, feature high quality design elements and promote the greening of the waterfront. Read more about the Waterfront Center award here.

Commissioner Burden attended the Women's Builders Council Dinner on behalf of Mayor Bloomberg, where she read a letter from the Mayor congratulating the Women's Builders Council for its leadership and achievements in New York City.

City Planning Commissioner Amanda M. Burden is the 2009 Laureate of the Urban Land Institute J.C. Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development.

The ULI J.C. Nichols Prize recognizes a person or a person representing an institution whose career demonstrates a commitment to the highest standards of responsible development. The $100,000 prize honors the legacy of Kansas City, Missouri, developer J.C. Nichols, a founding Urban Land Institute (ULI) member considered to be one of America's most creative entrepreneurs in land use during the first half of the 1900s. Commissioner Burden announced that she will donate the ULI J.C. Nichols prize money to ULI to create a yearly award honoring transformative and exciting public open spaces around the world.

To learn more about the award and ULI, read the press release here and watch the video on YouTube here.

Commissioner Burden was the keynote speaker at the biennale American Planning Association conference. Commissioner Burden discussed the Bloomberg Administration's ambitious rezoning agenda, and the emphasis on enhancing quality design throughout the city.

Commissioner Burden's dedication to design excellence was recognized by the Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts at their annual Ambassador to the Upper East Side Award dinner, held at the Colony Club September 22nd, 2009. At the diner, Commissioner Burden presented the administration's planning achievements, particularly focusing on design excellence, neighborhood character and public open spaces.

Commissioner Burden participated in a panel for the Manhattan Institute event 'Thinking Big New York and London: Heading Back to the Top' organized at Columbia University. The panel included academic Ken Jackson, head of the Regional Planning Association Bob Yaro as well as London's mayor chief of staff Sir Simon Milton and Director of Planning for the City of Westminster Rosemarie MacQueen. The panel followed remarks and questions and answers by Mayor Bloomberg and London Mayor Boris Johnson.

Commissioner Burden's dedication to design excellence was recognized by the Savannah College of Design at their annual Style Etoile Awards Gala, held at the James Cohan Gallery March 23rd, 2009. The awards gala honor innovative, trend-setting leaders in the fields of style and design. Commissioner Burden was joined in receiving this year's honor by hip hop mogul and designer Russell Simmons, Tony Award-winning Broadway costume designer William Ivey Long, Pulitzer Prize-winning fashion editor Robin Givhan, and curator of the C.Z. Guest Costume Collection at SCAD Cornelia Guest.

Peter Lobo, Deputy Director of City Planning's Population Division, was awarded a 2009 Fund for the City of New York Sloan Public Service Award. Each year the Fund honors six City employees at all ranks and levels of whose work performance and commitment to the public transcend not merely the ordinary but the extraordinary. Peter started working at City Planning in 1993 and was soon promoted to Deputy Director. He was the project manager for the Newest New Yorkers 2000 publication, which examined demographic changes and settlement patterns of immigrant groups, and his work is used by many city agencies and non-profit organizations.
