Mayor Bloomberg Announces New Competition to Develop Innovative Apartment Model for Small Households |
City Planning Commissioner Amanda Burden joined Mayor Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor Robert Steel, Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Mathew Wambua and more to launch the adAPT NYC Competition, a pilot program to develop a new housing model for the City’s growing small-household population.
“As with the Inclusionary Housing Program, adAPT NYC is another example of a successful partnership between HPD and City Planning where zoning innovation is used to broaden housing choices for New Yorkers,” said Planning Commissioner Burden. “With adAPT, we are using design layouts to define a new apartment model and ensure that the city’s housing meets the diverse needs of its residents

Vision 2020 wins the 2012 Daniel Burnham Award for a Comprehensive Plan
|
The American Planning Association has announced that Vision 2020 won the 2012 Daniel Burnham Award for a Comprehensive Plan, the highest award bestowed upon a comprehensive plan that advances the science and art of planning. Richard Barth, Michael Marrella and Mary Kimball accepted the award on Monday, April 16, 2012 at the 2012 American Planning Association conference in Los Angeles.

Commissioner Burden awarded Architecture League's President's Medal
|
On April 9, 2012 the Architectural League of New York presented its President’s Medal to City Planning Commissioner Amanda Burden. The President’s Medal is the Architectural League’s highest honor and is bestowed, at the discretion of the League’s President and Board of Directors, on individuals to recognize an extraordinary body of work in architecture, urbanism or design. Annabelle Selldorf, President of the Architectural League, said “Amanda Burden has creatively and effectively used zoning as a tool to shape the city’s future and to protect the valued essence of its past and present.” Learn more about the award. |

New York City wins Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize |
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced that New York City has won Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize in recognition of its leadership and achievement in sustainable policy, including the City’s landmark planning program PlaNYC. The international honor is presented biennially for outstanding contributions to sustainable urban policy that are practical and cost-effective, and serve as a model for cities across the globe. Read the Mayor’s remarks for the acceptance of the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize at the ceremony held today in Singapore.
Statement from City Planning Commissioner Amanda Burden:
“I am honored that the Department of City Planning has won the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize with our colleagues at the Parks Department and Department of Transportation. This award is for organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the creation of vibrant, livable and sustainable urban communities, which has been our mission throughout the five boroughs since the start of the Bloomberg Administration. Under the leadership of Mayor Bloomberg, the city is growing sustainably, creating high-quality public open spaces and expanding environmentally sound transportation options. This award is a testament to our work, and our commitment to keeping New York City vibrant, dynamic and young.”
The city’s submission, titled “NYC: Transforming for the 21st Century,” included Brooklyn Bridge Park, the High Line/West Chelsea plan, and the 17 plazas, including Times Square, and 255-plus miles of on-street bike lanes created since 2007.

Sustainable Communities planners in East New York |
On Saturday, March 3, 2012, the Sustainable Communities East New York study team held a public Visioning Forum for residents and stakeholders who live or work near the Broadway Junction area. See the flyer. Many community members attended to give valuable insights into the area and make recommendations for neighborhood improvements to the project team, which consisted of planners and urban designers from the Department of City Planning. We thank the event’s hosts at Aspirations High School, Principal Shermila Bharat and Assistant Principal Martin Coren, and the many graduate planning students from NYU, Hunter, and Pratt who helped with event coordination, note-taking and technical expertise.

HUD Sustainable Communities Initiative |
As part the HUD Sustainable Communities initiative, City Planning’s Bronx Sustainable Communities team has been working with the community residents and stakeholders to identify strategic actions to fully capitalize on the Bronx Metro North Corridor. A town hall meeting, with guest speaker Adolfo Carrion, was held on Monday, January 23rd, and two community tours were held on Saturday, January 28th. The initiative aims to connect Bronx residents to job centers in the region and maximize access to commuter rail stations in the Bronx. The strategies will seek to spur investment in lively, sustainable, mixed-use neighborhoods, with new mixed-income housing, improved station visibility, pedestrian access and intermodal connections around selected Bronx Metro North Stations.
