Maria M. Del Toro, Commissioner
Since 2004 until her retirement in December 2010, Ms. Del Toro was Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Public Policy for the YMCA of Greater New York. In that role, she oversaw all aspects of government relations and government funding. Maria began her career at the YMCA in 1998 as Director of Fund Development and Communications. Previously she worked as Director of Community Outreach for Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messenger, where she was responsible for supervising all 12 Manhattan Community Boards. Prior to that she was the Borough President’s Deputy Director of Land Use.
Maria graduated with honors in Philosophy and Psychology from CUNY – York College and went on to do her graduate work in philosophy at Princeton and Columbia Universities as a Ford Foundation Doctoral Fellow. For a number of years, she taught Philosophy at York College.
Maria is the Vice President of the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and is the Chair of the Synod Council.
