Materials for the Arts (MFTA), created by the
Department of Cultural Affairs in 1978, has provided thousands of organizations with the
materials they need to support and expand their programs. Headquartered in
a spacious warehouse in Long Island City, MFTA collects reusable items
from a host of reliable donors, and distributes them free of charge
to non-profit arts organizations, City agencies, public schools, and social, health
and community service organizations that have arts programs in New York
City. In 2008, MFTA received 2334 donations totaling more than
$6 million, and had 5,345 transactions to
registered groups.
