Urban Fellows ~ The Class of 2006-2007


 

Nana Akowuah
Nana is a 2006 graduate of Yale University where she majored in History of Art.  She is a native of Rochester, New York. Nana might be interested in a future in Urban Planning, but is open to pursuing other avenues.

 Nafeesah Allen 
Nafeesah is a 2006 graduate of Barnard College where her dual major was Africana Studies and Spanish and Latin American Culture with a concentration in Political Science.  She is a native of Newark, New Jersey. She enjoys writing, visiting different parts of the world and trying new foods.

Placement:  Office of Emergency Management, Division of External Affairs

 Daniel Blanco 
Daniel is a 2004 graduate of New York University where he majored in the Science of Social Work. In 2006, he achieved his Master of Science in Social Work at Columbia University. He is a native of Miami, Florida. He enjoys cooking, attempting the New York Times cross word puzzles and spending time on the beach in Miami with his five brothers and sisters.

 Joshua Braver 
Joshua is a 2006 graduate of University of California at Berkeley where he majored in Political Science.  He is a native of Los Angeles, California. Joshua hopes to earn a dual degree in law and political theory.

 Kristina Chan 
Kristina is a 2004 graduate of Wellesley College where her dual major was Peace and Justice Studies and Studio Art. She is a native of Queens, New York. She was a Starr Foundation Fellow in Philanthropy in 2005 and a 2006 Fulbright Scholar in Vienna, Austria. She paints, enjoys photography, and volunteers at a homeless shelter in her spare time.  Ana Chiu 
Ana is a 2006 graduate of Swarthmore College, where she majored in Economics with a minor in Public Policy.  She is a native of Brooklyn, New York.  Before this Fellowship, Ana worked for a non profits involved in youth and community development. She hopes to return to city government after business school.

Christina Corea
Christina is a 2006 graduate of Boston College, where she majored in International Studies/Political Science.  She is a native New Jersey.  She is an avid football fan of
both Boston College and the Giants. She hopes to study public policy and eventually run for office.

 Vijay Das 
Vijay is a 2006 graduate of Vassar College where he majored in Political Science.  Vijay is a native of the San Francisco Bay area of California. Vijay is considering a career in public interest law, academia or government.

 Rebecca Delachartre 
Rebecca is a graduate of Queens College (CUNY), where she majored in Anthropology.  Rebecca is a native of Brooklyn, New York. Her longtime interests are in anthropology and health issues. She plans to pursue an MD/MPH and establish a career in urban public health.

Placement:  Health and Hospital Corporation, Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital.

 Bonnie Duen
Bonnie is a 2006 graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY), where she majored in Leadership Studies in Public Policy.  Bonnie was born in Portland, Oregon but was raised in New York City. She has worked for a City Councilman and has been interested in both business and government careers.

 Julie Freccero
Julie is a 2005 graduate of the University of California, San Diego, where she majored in Urban Studies and Planning.  Julie grew up in the San Francisco Bay area of California.
Julie enjoys hiking, spontaneous road trips, traveling, dancing and live music. She plans to obtain a degree in either law or public policy.

 Naeema Hernandez
Naeema is a 2006 graduate of Mount Holyoke College, where she majored in Politics and English.  Naeema is a native Brooklyn, New York. She is actively interested in creating community development strategies and policies that positively impact youth within disadvantaged communities.

 Sam Horwich-Scholefield
Sam is a 2006 graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where he majored in History.  Sam was born in Florida but considers himself a Californian by choice. Biking, swimming and handball are his passions. He is considering going back to school for a Masters in Public Policy or a PHD in History.

 Tyler Jaeckel 
Tyler is a 2006 graduate of Northwestern University, where he majored in History and American Studies.  Tyler is a native of Colorado. Tyler is interested in pursuing a career in community development and hopes to be able to assist communities build on their existing assests.

 Thomael Joannidis
Thomael is a 2004 graduate of Hunter College (CUNY), where she majored in Sociology and English/Creative Writing.  She achieved a Masters Degree in Urban Affairs from Hunter College in 2006. Thomael is a native of Queens, New York.  Her research at Hunter explored the impact of the small schools movement and the portrayal of school nutrition in the media.  She is open to new opportunities that may arise as a result of the Fellowship.

 Rachel Lauter
Rachel is a graduate of Brown University, where she majored in Urban Studies and History.  Rachel grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. Rachel is an amateur painter, interested in politics, campaigns, and affordable housing advocacy.  She is also a member of  a  book club.

 Erica Lessem
Erica is a 2006 graduate of Georgetown University, where she majored in Spanish and Psychology.  Erica grew up in Newton, Massachusetts. She is passionate about public health, languages and travel. She hopes to combine her interests by pursuing a career in international health.

 Alyson Palmer
Alyson is a 2006 graduate of Seattle University, where she majored in Political Science.  Alyson is a native of Seattle, Washington. Alyson enjoys photography and travel. Alyson intends to pursue a career in law with a focus on mediation and conflict resolution.

 Ryder Pearce
Ryder is a graduate of Vassar College, where he majored in Urban Studies.  Ryder is a native of Rochester, New York. Ryder was active in his college soccer and squash teams. He is interested in architecture and urban planning as possible career goals.

 Hannah Roth
Hannah is a 2006 graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University, where she majored in Urban Studies and Environmental Science.  Hannah grew up in Amherst, Massachusetts. She took a year off from High School to participate in a year of national service with City Year Boston. She hopes to sail around the world some day.

 Hector Salazar-Salame
Hector is a 2004 graduate of James Madison University, where he majored in International Affairs and Spanish. Hector was born in Mexico, grew up in Virginia.
Prior to the Fellowship, Hector worked Washington D.C. at the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs.

Patrick Santoro
Patrick is a 2005 graduate of Ryerson University, where he majored in Urban and Regional Planning.  Patrick is a native of Vancouver, British Columbia.  Before the Fellowship, Patrick worked for an urban planning and economic development consulting firm in Toronto. His interests include bicycling, urban design, photography, and sports.

 David Seligman
David is 2005 graduate of Williams College, where he majored in Philosophy. In 2006, he achieved his MPhil Degree at Cambridge University.  David is a native of Denver, Colorado. At Williams he was the Captain of the Rugby Football Club. He has been interested in development projects in Los Conucos, the Dominican Republic. This experience and involvement has furthered his interest in public service.

 Maxwell Young 
Max is a 2006 graduate of Dartmouth College, where he majored in Government.  Maxwell is a native of New York City. At Dartmouth he was interested in hiking, cycling, working in the woodshop and tutoring children from the surrounding area. He is interested in pursuing a public service career, possible in law or as an elected official.

 Jin Ren Zhang
Jin Ren is a 2006 graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY), where he majored in Government.  Originally from China, Jin has lived in New York City since he was 13 years old.  Jin became an activist as he championed the rights of Asians. He became interested in civic affairs and worked at the Manhattan Borough Presidents Office. At John Jay he was an activist in support of CUNY. He was also the first undergraduate intern for a Federal District Court Judge. He hopes one day to be able to run for elected office.
