Manhattan Municipal Building
1 Centre Street
New York, NY 10007
Date Built: 1913-1918
Architect: William A. Kendall / McKim Mead & White
The Municipal Building is at the intersection of Chambers and Centre Streets, east of City Hall Park. It houses many agencies of the city government, including the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, the Comptroller's Office, the office of the the Borough President of Manhattan, the City Clerk's Office, WNYC radio, the NYC Media Group (a division of the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications), and the Department of Finance.
The Municipal Building was designed by William A. Kendall of the famous architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White. It was completed in 1918 at a cost of just under $9 million, which included the price of the land. The design of the building gives a balanced appearance of both skyscraper construction and a classic federal style. A major feature in its design is an open plaza that appears to be carved out of the first three stories of the structure. It joins the IRT subway entrance to its main lobbies and to adjacent streets and spaces.
The Municipal Building is a designated New York City Landmark.
