An afterschool service learning program that encourages youth to design,
develop, and implement meaningful service projects in their communities.
Studies have shown
that the combination of structured learning and challenging service experiences
can offer benefits that are especially significant for adolescent participants,
including reduced risk for teen pregnancy, increased school engagement, and
improved chances for academic success.
Teen ACTION is an after-school program that enriches and empowers 3,000
middle and high school youth. Offered at 57 different locations throughout the
City, Teen ACTION is designed to help youth develop positive life skills,
self-worth, and social responsibility.
Teen ACTION participants have the opportunity to work with staff to research
problems affecting their schools or communities and brainstorm potential
solutions. Participants then generate, develop, and undertake their own projects
designed to address these issues. The service experience is combined with
reflection activities and a learning experience that includes a comprehensive
curriculum that emphasizes the development of leadership skills and healthy
behaviors.
Eligibility: Young adults age 13-21 who are enrolled in
middle or high school.
Partner Agency: Department of Youth & Community
