Provides young adults involved in the criminal justice system with skills building, social support, and leadership training through meaningful service to their communities as well as internship, employment, and educational placement opportunities.
The NYC Justice Corps brings young adults involved
with the criminal justice system together with their communities to identify and
address unmet community needs. Through meaningful and reparative service
to their communities, internships, and job and educational opportunities, the
program provides members with practical skills, social support and leadership
training. By actively partnering with the NYC Justice Corps, communities
own the success and reintegration of their young people as contributing members
of society. The program aims to improve the education and employment
outcomes of Corps members, reduce recidivism, and support community development
in specific New York City neighborhoods.
Eligibility: Young adults
aged 18 to 24 years old who reside in one of the two target areas: Mott Haven,
Melrose, Morrisania sections of the South Bronx or Bedford-Stuyvesant,
Brooklyn. Corps members must be currently on probation or parole; or
released from the City’s jail system or a NYS prison within a year of enrolling,
or currently or recently enrolled in an alternative-to-incarceration
program.
Partner Agency: John Jay
College of Criminal Justice on behalf of the City University of New York and the
NYC Departments of Correction and Probation.
The NYC Justice
Corps is being rigorously evaluated by an independent research firm to measure
the effectiveness of a range of intended impacts for multiple stakeholders,
including Corps members, target communities, and the community-based
organizations. Intended outcomes for Corps members include a decrease in
re-arrest and reconviction and increased labor market prospects. Results
for the target communities include enhanced ability to reintegrate young adults
who have been involved with the criminal justice system; and lasting, visible
improvement resulting from community benefit service projects. Outcomes
for the community-based organizations include improved staff capacity and an
increased capacity to provide services to young adults returning to the
community.
