Young Adult Internship Program (YMI)

Young Men's Initiative

Partner Agency: Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD)

The Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP) was designed recognizing that many disconnected youth already possess the basic skills needed to enter the labor market and may need only a short-term intervention and work experience to connect to sustainable employment or educational programs. Participants in YAIP complete a 14 week program including an orientation, internship, and paid educational workshops.

Context
There are an estimated 200,000 young people ages 16 to 24 in New York City who are not in school and not working. These disconnected young adults are at risk of long-term economic hardship as they miss opportunities to become members of a workforce that is increasingly educated and skilled.

Evidence for Approach
Research suggests that about half of disconnected 16-to-24-year-olds have a H.S. diploma or its equivalent, although many also struggle with weak literacy skills. National research also shows that early work experience during teenage years leads to positive labor market outcomes for youth, especially for those who do not enroll in four-year colleges/universities immediately after leaving H.S. Young adults who obtain more work experience during these years have smoother transitions to the labor market and higher beginning wages as well as higher earnings 10 to 15 years after leaving H.S.

Key Features

  • Participants complete a 14 week program, composed of:
    • A paid orientation period (2-3 weeks)
    • An internship, with weekly paid educational workshops (10-12 weeks)
  • Post-internship, participants also receive 9-months of follow-up services to provide assistance with placement and retention
