Community Outreach
The Community Outreach Unit
informs the public about the CCRB, its mission, and procedures
for filing complaints. It is also responsible for the agency's
semi-annual reports, press releases, website, and other public
and media materials.
Outreach staff members travel to colleges, high
schools, tenant associations, immigrant advocacy groups, churches,
and other community-based organizations in New York City to
make presentations. In 2006, the outreach staff made 42 presentations.
A priority of the unit is making presentations
to public high school classes throughout the city. Incorporating
role plays and question-and-answer periods into their presentations,
the staff ensures that thousands of young adults receive relevant
information relating to the CCRB as well as legal principles
concerning police stop-and-frisk procedures.
The CCRB's Outreach Unit has developed informational
brochures that are distributed to schools, libraries, community
centers, police precincts, and legal groups around the city.
The brochures are available in English, Spanish, Arabic, and
Chinese. Pocket-sized pamphlets instructing civilians how
to appropriately handle police encounters are available in
English and Spanish.
