Mary Ellen Fitzmaurice, Esq.
Former Justice Mary Ellen Fitzmaurice served as a New York State judge for twenty-two years.
She began her judicial career in 1990 when she was appointed to serve as a Judge in the Queens County Family Court,
where she adjudicated: neglect and abuse proceedings; paternity matters; proceedings to terminate parental rights;
and domestic violence, adoption and juvenile delinquency cases. From 1995 to 2001 Ms. Fitzmaurice was
the Supervising Judge for the Queens Family Court, overseeing its daily operations and the work of seven judges
and dozens of non-judicial employees. She then served until 2010 as an Acting Supreme Court Justice in
Brooklyn and Queens where she presided over matrimonial matters, returning to Family Court from 2010 to 2012.
Ms. Fitzmaurice began her legal career with the Legal Aid Society Juvenile Rights Division,
followed by a private legal practice. She then served in the NYC Human Resources Administration where
she trained a staff of 30 attorneys and litigated complex abuse and neglect cases.
Ms. Fitzmaurice is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the Queens Bar Association,
NYS Association of Family Court Judges, the Queens Women’s Bar Association and the NYC Family Court Judges Association.
She is a Mayoral designee, appointed to the Board in August 2012.
