Human Rights Commissioner Patricia L. Gatling was one of two keynote speakers at the 2011 CLM Diversity Forum: Building Strength Through Diversity. CLM - Claims & Litigation Management Alliance - held its inaugural national diversity forum in New York City, focusing on diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Theodore Shaw, Professor of Professional Practice at Columbia University, was also a keynote speaker at the event.

US Army War College Visits the Commission, 11-17-11
Members of the U.S. Army War College Class of 2012 met with Human Rights Commissioner Gatling and staff during their visit to NYC. This annual stop for the War College officers and civilian executives provides them with insight into the Commission, the Human Rights Law, and how it works for New Yorkers and visitors.

The Commission ordered a bridal hair and makeup stylist to pay a potential client $7,500 in damages and a $15,000 fine to the City for denying service to a woman based on her race.

Commission Staff Train NYC School Administrators, 11-08-11
The Commission conducted all day training sessions in Manhattan and Brooklyn for assistant principals, deans, and school counselors in conjunction with the NYC Department of Education's Office of Professional Development. Human rights specialists delivered workshops: on bias/discrimination; sexual harassment; and cyberbullying.

Deputy Commissioner/General Counsel Cliff Mulqueen testified before NYC Council's Committees on Civil Rights and Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Alcoholism, Drug Abuse, and Disability Services on the Commission's Equal Access efforts.

Making Reentry Our Community Goal for the Formerly Incarcerated of Staten Island, 10-27-11 Commissioner Gatling, NYC Council Member Rose, and St. Philips Baptist Church Pastor Rev. Dr. Baker hosted ‘Making Reentry Our Community Goal’ to assist over 200 formerly incarcerated individuals residing in Staten Island successfully transition home. Over 25 NYC and community service agencies provided information on job training, employment rights, and legal services.

National Disability Mentoring Day, 10-19-11 

National Disability Mentoring Day, 10-19-11
The Commission participated in the American Association for People With Disabilities' National Disability Mentoring Day (DMD), locally coordinated through the Mayor's Office for People With Disabilities. DMD pairs disabled students and job-seeker mentees with potential employer-mentors in a one-day job shadowing experience in the field of the mentees' choice. Ana Edmonds, a recent college graduate who expects to attend law school, spent the day learning about the NYC Commission on Human Rights, and trailing Commission staff members.

Commission and Mayor's Office for People With Disabilities Mark Nat. Disability Employment Month, 10-19-11
The Commission joined with the Mayor's Office for People With Disabilities to bring attention to National Disability Employment Month, underscoring the need to tap the talents of all New Yorkers and encourage individuals with disabilities to report employment discrimination.

Commissioner Gatling Meets With Germany's Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency, 10-17-11
Commissioner Patricia L. Gatling met with two members of the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency (FADA), an independent anti-discrimination agency in Germany. Commissioner Gatling highlighted the NYC Human Rights Law and how the Commission enforces it. The visitors were part of the International Visitor Leadership Program though the US Department of State.
