May 2015 - The Parks & Recreation Committee of Bronx Community Board No. 8, in conjuction with the Department of Parks & Recreation, conducted a bioblitz in Van Cortlandt Park.  A bioblitz is a careful survey of the plant and animal life within a defined area.  In this case, the area was the southern end of the Putnam Trail, the southeast corner of the Parade Grounds, and the adjacent woodlands and wetlands.

Approximately 100 people participated.  They included naturalists and biologists from institutions of higher learning as well as students ranging in age from middle school to college and members of the community board and the local community.

The data from the bioblitz were compiled by naturalist Parker Gambino.  Thanks to him and to Van Cortlandt Park naturalist Dennis Burton for their invaluable assistance on the bioblitz.
