The design of these pedestrian bridges, which are both key access routes for pedestrians and cyclists over highways to parkland, utilizes a spiraled alignment to simultaneously manage the extensive length of the ADA-compliant ramps and create an enjoyable route with 360-degree views through the tree canopy. The protective fencing is canted outwards to minimize the bridge profile and alleviate the sense of enclosure for the user. The design specifies concrete with a high content of silica fume, a by-product of silicon alloy production, to reduce the material’s carbon content, increase the compressive strength, and produce a rich dark grey appearance.
