95-06 Astoria Boulevard, Queens
A Project of the Department of Design and Construction and Queens Library
Garrison Architects
The addition transforms the original 1970s library building inside and out. An elegantly detailed aluminum curtain wall system wraps the façade, and an extensive polycarbonate skylight above an interior courtyard bathes the currently dim reading rooms in natural light. Extending into the neighboring lot, the addition houses space for young adults, restrooms, a multipurpose assembly room, and a lush rear garden. Added storage space is camouflaged with an attractive Kynar-coated aluminum louvered façade with integrated supergraphics that proudly announce the library in a vibrant green intended to match the color of the Newtown Pippin apple, Elmhurst's own cultivar.
