Dr. Mahnaz Ispahani Bartos serves on the Public Design Commission of the City of New York as the representative of the New York Public Library where she is a Trustee, member of the Executive Committee of the Board and Co-Chair of the Program and Policy Committee. Mahnaz is a foreign policy scholar who served for nearly a decade (1992-2002) at the Ford Foundation, and between 2002 and 2006 as Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. She has also been senior advisor on global security, and religion and culture, to diverse institutions including the Carnegie Corporation, the Luce Foundation, the Open Society Institute and the Asia Society. She is a Trustee of the American Assembly. Mahnaz has been a senior scholar at the Smithsonian Institution (Woodrow Wilson Center) and Harvard University (Belfer Center). She has published widely over three decades, including a book, monographs, reports, refereed articles, essays and extensive journalism. She received her B.A., Phi Beta Kappa, from Wellesley College where she also served on the Board of Trustees from 2004 until 2012. She received an M.A.L.D and a Ph.D. from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. She is a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
