Commissioners

Alice Aycock is the sculptor member of the Public Design Commission of the City of New York. Her work is found in major public and private collections throughout the world. She has received numerous awards, including four National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships. In 1977, Alice had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and in 1983 exhibited at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. She has had two major retrospective exhibitions: a traveling show in 1983-84 organized by the Wurttembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart, Germany, and her most recent retrospective entitled Complex Visions organized by the Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, New York in 1990. Alice was represented by the John Weber Gallery in New York City from 1976 to 2001. She was appointed to the GSA’s National Register of Peer Professionals in 2005. Alice has taught at numerous colleges and universities, including Yale University (1988-92) and the School of Visual Arts since 1991. Alice has three major sculptural installations in the New York area, including East River Roundabout, at 60th Street and the FDR, and The Star Sifter, a large architectural sculpture for the rotunda of the new Terminal One at JFK Airport. She has recently been awarded a commission for the Nashville, Tennessee waterfront and the Kansas City International Airport. MIT Press published a monograph on the artist by Robert Hobbs in the fall of 2005. Alice received a B.A. from Douglass College in 1968 and an M.A. from Hunter College in 1971.
