Transition to College Internship

Transition to College Internship and Alumni Engagement

The Transition to College Internship is an innovative joint venture between the Mayor's Office of Adult Education and The City University of New York (CUNY) for GED and ESOL graduates now in college. The internship goals are to strengthen adult education outcomes, including persistence rates, and to promote more successful transitions to college.

The success of the first intern cohort (Fall 2008) demonstrates that alumni from literacy programs who have transitioned to college are uniquely positioned to motivate and assist current GED students, as well as to support other GED and ESOL alumni in college to meet their education goals.

GED graduates who are currently enrolled in college or in college-prep classes can apply for a Transition to College Internship with the Mayor's Office of Adult Education. Interns will have the opportunity to build peer leadership and learner-led networks in order to strengthen outcomes for current GED students and alumni enrolled in college and vocational training. Interns will work closely with other alumni and with GED programs to improve persistence, graduation rates and transitions to college and vocational certification programs.

Learner Leadership
Analyzing data from the Student Voices Study, interns identified four strategies for strengthening the adult education system through student and alumni leadership. These were organized into a Learner Leadership Pyramid, reflecting the relative emphasis of each strategy
  • Advocacy to help raise awareness of the importance of the adult education system and ways to strengthen it.
  • Information and communication including "college knowledge," and other resources to those who need it.
  • Outreach and Community Organizing to build strong relationships and active peer networks and reach out to new partners and allies.
  • Support and motivation for current students and alumni to achieve their goals.

Transition to College Internship Results
  • Significant shifts in leadership capacities of participating adult education alumni.
  • Presentations at several national conferences, including the National College Transition Conference.
  • Alumni interns made presentations to approximately 350 GED students in 2008, with positive feedback from students and program administrators.
  • CUNY GED programs interested in continuing to partner with alumni and Transition to College interns.
  • Other programs interested in T2C presentations and want their alumni to participate.
