You can find free classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages, basic reading and writing, GED test preparation, and career and technical education offered in locations throughout the City. These classes are open to everyone, and you do not need to show proof of citizenship.

Use the Find a Program search tool to locate programs in your neighborhood. You can define your search by type of service offered (ESOL, adult literacy, GED, or job training), borough, or ZIP code. Please remember that program offices are listed by borough, but they may have other classrooms throughout the City.

GED ResourcesGED Resources
The GED is for adults who did not finish a formal high school program. The GED, or General Educational Development, is group of five subject tests: writing, social studies, sciences, reading and mathematics. Adults who pass these tests will earn a GED credential that certifies their achievement of high school-level academic knowledge and skills.

If your students did not complete high school, earning a GED should be at the top of their list of things to do. A GED can be their ticket to getting into college, qualifying for job training programs, or finding better paying jobs. For more information on preparing for and taking the GED tests, testing center locations, and other helpful resources, please visit the New York State GED homepage.
