Mayor Bloomberg Honors Immigrant Heritage Week Awardee Weihua "Wendy" Wen, 2007
An immigrant New Yorker with 30+ years of teaching experience still inspired by her students
ESOL teacher Wendy Wen's expertise is teaching adults with very minimal English skills or limited native language literacy skills. Wendy has spent over 20 years in the South Bronx for the Office of Adult and Continuing Education, New York City Public Schools. Her classrooms focus on collaborative learning and community building. She integrates basic computer technology and health literacy in the daily lessons. Wendy and her students have been active participants in the City's Health Literacy Campaign since 2007.
Being an immigrant herself, Wendy understands the difficulties her students face in their everyday lives. She believes everyone has an equal opportunity to education and that improving English language skills is the key to success. Wendy is inspired by her immigrant students' dedication in their studies, especially how they always find ways to attend class despite having to balance family and work needs. In recognition of the contributions she has made in the immigrant community, Mayor Bloomberg honored Wendy as an Immigrant History Week 2007 awardee.
