The Mayor’s Office, CUNY, and the LAC Award We Are New York Grants to ESL Teachers
The Mayor’s Office, The City University of New York, and the Literacy Assistance Center awarded $120,000 to 46 ESL teachers. Award winners will create new ways of using We Are New York to help adults learn English. Projects will incorporate the television show to develop lesson plans for use in existing ESL programs, as well as offer support and learning opportunities to more people in the community. Examples include:

  • BEGIN Managed Programs: Teaching We Are New York – A Student Led Discussion Project
Advanced ESOL students will learn how to plan, lead and evaluate a discussion group to lower level ESOL students. This student-directed, participatory series of workshops and classes will engage adults in meaningful involvement with the We Are New York television show.

  • The Children’s Aid Society – East Harlem Head Start: We Are New York Parent Program
Immigrant parents will learn to advocate for themselves and their families, and aid their successful integration into the larger NYC community. The program will combine workshops, field trips, and family literacy classes based on We Are New York episodes.

  • Queens Community House: English at the Movies – We Are New York
Teachers will rent a movie theatre once a week to show the entire We Are New York television series. It will be free of charge for any interested students and will help reach out to adults on waiting lists for English classes. The interactive program will include story telling, singing, games, and video-assisted exercises based on the episodes. Participants will also receive handouts to help them learn English at home.

We Are New York is a new half-hour TV show created by the Mayor’s Office of Adult Education and the City University of New York. Each episode has a different story of immigrants living in New York City. The show is intended to help people learn English that will be useful to them.

Watch the show on Channel 25 (Cablevision 22) Saturdays at 4:00 pm and Sundays at 7:30 am, or on Channel 74 Fridays at 10:00 pm and Sundays at 1:00 pm.
