CUNY Peter Jennings Scholarship Laurel Award
Recognizing exemplary GED graduates who overcome hardships and advance into CUNY colleges
The CUNY Peter Jennings Scholarship Laurel Award honors outstanding students who have achieved their General Educational Development (GED) diploma and have enrolled in CUNY colleges. In 2009, CUNY awarded $1,500 scholarships to eleven students. The scholarship winners hail from the United States, Burma, Columbia, Guyana, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Jamaica, and Uzbekistan.
The scholarships are named in honor of Peter Jennings, the famed ABC World News Tonight anchor. Mr. Jennings was an unwavering supporter of CUNY's GED program and spoke passionately at ceremonies honoring students who, despite enormous hardship, had obtained their GED degrees. The Peter Jennings Scholarships have helped over 75 GED graduates begin their academic careers at CUNY.
