Social Media Fellows Connect and Engage The Adult Education System
Eight NYC graduate students developed social media projects to foster digital communication of information, ideas and other content relevant to the City’s adult education system. The Fellows collaborated with College & Community Fellowship, the Mayor’s Office of Adult Education and the New York City Council, the New York Public Library, and the We Are New York Community Project. The projects enhanced peer networking, promoted opportunities for education and employment, and increased the real-time engagement of adult learners, staff, tutors and volunteers.

Susan Dalmas Receives Prestigious 2011 Sloan Public Service Award
Susan Dalmas, Director of the Queens Library Adult Learning Program, received a 2011 Sloan Public Service Award--widely regarded as the Nobel Prize of City Government. She was recognized for her outstanding civil service whose work performance and commitment to the public transcend not only the ordinary but the extraordinary. Susan oversees the largest library-based literacy program in the nation, serving over 6,000 learners a year. She is a sought-after expert in the field, and her innovative programming for adult learners has been adopted by libraries across the U.S.

LaGuardia Community College Professional Awarded the 2011 New York Times ESOL Teacher of the Year
Paula Da Silva-Michelin, an ESOL teacher at LaGuardia's Center for Immigrant Education and Training, was recognized for her contributions in-and-out of the classroom. Her dedication as a teacher and mentor has helped her students develop the skills they need to create successful lives in NYC. The Times also recognized Elaine Soffer from Nassau Community College, and Robin Winters from the Harlem YMCA New Americans Welcome Center. The awards ceremony takes place on April 8 at the New York Times..

Anthony Tassi, former Executive Director of the Mayor's Office of Adult Education, releases an open letter reminding formerly-incarcerated adults they are smart, capable and able to help and lead others. He also encourages them to continue school, earn their GEDs and enroll in college or a job training program. Adults being released from prison or jail should not be discouraged and believe educational opportunities are out of reach, but rather, they should expect great things of themselves.

NYC Mayor's Office of Adult EducationWe Are New York Professional Day a Big Success
Over 100 ESL teachers attended the We Are New York Professional Development Day. Through a variety of workshops, participants learned exciting new ways to use the series. Nearly every teacher responding to the evaluation survey indicated they were planning to use the lesson plans and resources presented in the workshops. In particular, 92% of teachers who had never used WANY before reported they were "likely" or "very likely" to use it in their classrooms.

The Mayor's Office of Adult Education (MOAE) invited members of NYC's adult education community to participate in an inaugural Adult Education Computer and Internet Survey. Over 3,000 adult learners, teachers, and program managers participated in the survey. Their tremendous response provided a snapshot of how adult education programs from across the City use computers and the internet. The results will inform the City's technology and digital literacy agenda.

Forty-six NYC teachers will create exciting new ways of using We Are New York to help adults learn English. Projects will incorporate the We Are New York television show to develop lesson plans for use in existing ESL programs, as well as offer support and learning opportunities to more people.

Community leaders in Washington Heights, Jackson Heights, and Brighton Beach hosted celebrations for We Are New York, a new show created by the Mayor's Office of Adult Education and the City University of New York. Guests viewed clips from episodes filmed in their neighborhoods and shared ways to use this exciting new TV show to help adults learn English.
