The Center for Family Life is a neighborhood-based organization in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Since 1978, the Center has been a force for positive change and a pioneer in effective services for children and families. One of Center’s successes has been its women’s cooperatives--women-owned, women-run businesses designed to create living wage jobs. These are carried out in safe and healthy environments, and promote social support and educational opportunities for its members. With a grant from the Mayor’s Office of Adult Education, the Center developed contextualized ESOL curricula for these cooperatives. The business cooperatives offer eco-friendly housecleaning services (We Can Do It!); babysitting and childcare services (Beyond Care); interior painting (Color Me!); and catering and cooking lessons (Émigré Gourmet)
