Adult educators are helping adults learn about low-cost, convenient, and child-friendly ways to be active, while enhancing functional literacy skills including math and reading.
With the Be Active lesson plan, teachers are encouraged to show students different kinds of physical activity. Students can exercise in the classroom, the neighborhood, or use the City's parks. Teachers can show students how to sign up for a low-cost membership at City Parks Department recreation centers across the City.

Success Stories from the Be Active Lesson
In the summer of 2008, three adult education classes did a Photo Voice project to document their experience with the Be Active lesson. Learners took pictures to communicate their thoughts about physical activity before and after the lesson. They wrote captions for each photo. The pictures show how students expanded their ideas about physical activity. The pictures also show how students became more personally connected to physical activity after the Be Active lesson.
