Pre-College Programs
Goal: To increase the number of youth in foster care who successfully earn a high school diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED) and enter a post-secondary institution. The G.A.T.E. Pre-College Program enables youth to pursue and fulfill their educational goals by providing guidance, college exposure, academic support, mentoring and a strong network for accessing information and resources.
Eligibility: Students in grades 8 through 12 who are in foster care are eligible to participate in pre-college programs.
G.A.T.E. Pre-College Programs offers the following services:
College Now Program
The College Now Program successfully matches students with mentors who will guide, inform, and support students from high school to college. Students in the College Now Program may enroll in non-credit or college credit courses, participate in educational enrichment workshops and/or attend S.A.T. preparation courses. Youth will also have an opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with their mentors through team-building activities, field trips, and a variety of groups sponsored activities. Individual achievements and progress in the program will be acknowledged and celebrated through the Milestone Ceremony.
For more information on the OYD College Now Program contact an OYD education counselor.
The OYD College Now Program is funded by New Yorkers for Children.
College Essay
Students applying to college may be required to submit an essay as part of their college application. OYD education counselors work with students to improve their drafted essays. We help students formulate ideas, edit text, and make suggestions for improvement. Students will have access to our computer center to type and edit their essays.
College Tours
Youth enrolled in the OYD Pre-College program have an opportunity to visit colleges within New York State, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New England and southern states. College tours are scheduled periodically throughout the year, normally during school recess.
College Prep Workshops
Youth graduating from high school and/or a GED program are encouraged to attend college preparation workshops scheduled regularly throughout the year. Topics include, but are not limited to: types of colleges, college life, time and financial management, relationships, careers, creative writing (journaling), and much more.
S.A.T. Preparation
Most colleges require students to submit S.A.T. scores for college admissions. With adequate test preparations, students may significantly increase their S.A.T. scores and improve their chances of entering a two or four year college. S.A.T. preparation classes are available to students enrolled in the Pre-College G.A.T.E. program. Students interested in taking this course should be prepared to make a four to six week time commitment. Please contact an OYD education counselor for more information.
This program is funded by the New York Community Trust and New Yorkers for Children.
