NYC Administration for Children’s Services and Department of Education Host High School Goal Weekend for 7th & 8th Grade Foster Care Youth

New York. NY – The New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) in partnership with the New York City Department of Education (DOE) hosted the second annual High School Goal Weekend on Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25 at the Brooklyn Technical High School, Brooklyn, New York.

High School Goal Weekend provided 8th and 7th grade students in foster care and from adoptive homes with additional support for the DOE high school planning and application process.  Youth participants received one-on-one counseling sessions with DOE Enrollment staff to help them select the high school that best meets their needs. Trained volunteers were available to guide the youth through the Citywide High School Fair running concurrently and facilitate conversations around their options with representatives from high schools throughout New York City.  In addition, 8th graders were given assistance with completing their DOE high school application.

Welcoming the students to the event, ACS Commissioner Ronald E. Richter said, “Choosing the right high school is a critical decision that will affect your future and can be a daunting challenge.  Children's Services and the Department of Education are here to offer you concrete guidance and moral support.  Education is the key to your future.  By being here, you are taking a giant step forward in exactly the right direction.”

As a result of last year’s event, all of the participating 8th graders were accepted into one of their top three high school choices.

“I have high expectations for all of our students to graduate college and be career-ready,” said Department of Education Chancellor Dennis Walcott. “For our students who come from difficult circumstances, High School Goal Weekend will provide them with the guidance and mentorship to succeed in high school and beyond.”

High School Goal Weekend is sponsored through the generosity of New Yorkers For Children (NYFC), which works in partnership with ACS to improve services for children in foster care.  Among its many programs, NYFC has encouraged foster children to reach their educational goals through college scholarships, mentoring, and in-kind donation programs to provide children in foster care with essentials needed for school and college, as well as networking events.
Approximately 200 7th and 8th graders attended the event and participated in a full day of workshops and counseling sessions conducted by staff from the DOE.
