ACS Receives GLAAD Amplifier Award for Foster Parent Recruitment Advertisement
The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) was presented with a GLAAD Amplifier Award by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for its “Be Their Champion” foster parent recruitment subway ad, part of a campaign to recruit foster parents to care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth in foster care. The award honors individuals and organizations in the advertising and corporate marketing field who have demonstrated creative and innovative leadership in their commitment to promoting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) inclusion in mainstream and LGBT-specific advertising. The presentation was made on Tuesday, October 4th during the 2011 GLAAD Amplifier Awards in New York City.

Lorraine Stephens Deputy Commissioner for Family Permanency, the ACS division responsible for foster parent recruitment accepted the award on behalf of the agency. She noted that the subway ad represented part of ACS’s efforts to improve the quality of services for LGBTQ youth and families. “One of the most important aspect of this effort is the recruitment and support of LGBT and LGBT-affirming foster parents. Our young people need loving families that are accepting of them as unique individuals and who will be there for them throughout their lives,” she said.
The “Be Their Champion” campaign was developed to help find loving homes for youth in foster care. The ad which was honored ran on subway cars throughout the City in August 2011, along with ads in newspapers, radio and the internet. In addition, ACS is working with LGBT advocates and foster care providers to improve practice and provide services to ensure that all children in care are safe, supported, and being cared for in environments where they can succeed.
