Building Healthy Communities

A community's health isn't limited to access to medical care. Physical and mental health are critical elements for improving social wellbeing. Vibrant public spaces are essential community resources where people come together to play, learn, grow food, exercise and relax.

Yet many higher-poverty neighborhoods have historically been neglected from public investment in open spaces and playgrounds. These same communities often report high rates of crime and equally high rates of obesity and diabetes.

Building Healthy Communities will work with local, public and private partners to address those inequities and improve community health outcomes in 12 neighborhoods across all five boroughs by improving opportunities for physical activity; increasing access to nutritious and affordable food; and promoting public safety.
