The City installs and maintains bike parking and lanes, provides regulations for bike traffic, and runs programs to keep cyclists safe.
The City provides free bicycle helmets and fittings to New York City residents. The City also distributes a free copy of a bicycle map.
The City installs public bike racks on City property. You may also request an application package to install a private bike rack. The package includes the required procedures, permit application, and insurance form.
The City responds to reports that a City-owned bike rack needs repair, removal or relocation. If a privately-owned bike rack is broken, report the problem to the manager of the building next to the rack. If you do not know who manages the building, you can check the Department of Finance's property information records online.
To request a new bike lane on a street, contact your local community board, a Council Member, or a Department of Transportation Borough Commissioner.
