In 1940, and again in the mid-1980s, the Department of Taxes (now Department of
Finance) took a photograph of every building in New York City as part of the
real property appraisal process. You can purchase these
images.
The photographs may also be viewed free of charge on microfilm at
the Municipal Archives.
