NYCHA Pet Policy Information or Non-Compliance Complaint

NYCHA residents must submit a registration form for every dog, cat, or Service Animal within 30 days after it is obtained. Each household may own either one domesticated dog or one domesticated cat per apartment weighing no more than 25 pounds (40 pounds if registered prior to February 1, 2010).

Most residents are required to pay a one-time, non-refundable fee of $25 to register an animal. After the registration form is submitted, the resident must submit a veterinarian certification showing that the dog or cat was examined, was spayed or neutered, has a current rabies vaccination, and that the dog is licensed by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. A dog or cat that is not registered is prohibited and may not reside in or visit a NYCHA apartment.

Reasonable quantities of other pets, such as small caged birds, fish, and other small caged animals, such as hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs, are allowed when maintained in accordance with the City Health Code. These small pets do not need to be registered.

As of February 1, 2010, specific breeds are restricted. These dog breeds (either full breed or mixed breed) include Doberman Pincher, Pit Bull, and Rottweiler and are restricted unless they were registered before January 31, 2010. If they were not registered before January 31, 2010, they must be removed from NYCHA property.

Complaints about non-compliance with this pet policy are accepted.

Registration forms are available at development management offices.
