Abandoned Vehicle

The City accepts reports of abandoned vehicles on public property. Public property includes streets, sidewalks, highway embankments, and alleys.

The City removes derelict vehicles from private property for a fee. The vehicle must be abandoned and derelict with no license plate. Vehicles owned by and discarded by property owners are not eligible.

Property owners must sign a waiver and the lot where the vehicle is must be accessible. To request the removal of an abandoned vehicle that you do not own from private property for a fee, send a letter to:

Derelict Vehicle Removal
Department of Sanitation
Central Correspondence Unit
346 Broadway, 10th Floor
New York, NY 10013

Reports about abandoned vehicles with at least one license plate or an in-transit paper registration plate which has been left on public property for 48 hours or longer are also accepted. The vehicle owner will be responsible for all tow and storage fees. Officers from your local police precinct will respond when they are not handling emergency situations.

Call 911 to report a vehicle alarm in progress.
