Towing License

The City licenses tow truck companies and drivers.

A business must have a Tow Truck Company License to tow vehicles for profit. Any New York City based towing company towing a car within New York City must be licensed. Non New York City based tow trucks picking up passenger vehicles within New York City must also be licensed. Individuals must have a Tow Truck Driver License to drive a tow truck.

A business that tows vehicles for any purpose other than profit must get a Tow Truck Exemption License. The City issues Tow Truck Exemption Licenses to:

  • Vehicle Dismantlers
  • Public Transportation
  • Bus Companies
  • Taxi or Limousine Companies
  • Motor Vehicle Rental Agencies
  • School Bus Operators
  • Public Utility Companies
