FDNY Teams Up with Department of Buildings to Spread Safety Message
Members of the FDNY’s Fire Safety Education Unit joined members of New York City’s Department of Buildings (DOB) on Nov. 18 at the 74th Street train station in Jackson Heights, Queens, to educate the public about the dangers of illegal conversions. It’s part of a three-week campaign to educate New Yorkers about the dangers of these living areas.

Plaque Dedicated for Probationary Firefighter Jamel Sears
Firefighters gathered at the Fire Academy on Nov. 10 for a solemn plaque dedication ceremony honoring Probationary Firefighter Jamel M. Sears. The 33-year-old firefighter collapsed while at the FDNY Training Academy on Nov. 10, 2008. He was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he died the following evening.

FDNY Distributes H1N1 Vaccine during the Seventh Annual BIOPOD Drill
At the FDNY, preparation is essential. So the Department held its seventh annual BIOPOD drill from Nov. 5 through 8, during which all first responders were offered the H1N1 influenza vaccine. The exercise is part of the Department’s ongoing initiative to plan for its response to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive incidents.

FDNY beats NYPD for Sixth Straight Year at ING New York City Marathon
FDNY beat the NYPD for the sixth straight year in the 2009 ING New York City Marathon this year, with 10 members of the fire department finishing before 10 members of the police department could cross the finish line on Nov. 1 in Central Park.

New Fire Code for New York City
The Fire Department’s four-year Fire Code Revision Project culminated on May 28, 2008, with the City Council’s enactment of a new Fire Code for New York City. The legislation, Local Law No. 26 of 2008, was signed by Mayor Bloomberg on June 3, 2008.
